Practical: 4/02/16

Well, being an eager beaver and loving photography I suggested that we try booking a studio and try shooting 'solo'

It was a great idea in theory. I was really keen to shoot with the 100mm lens and I thought that this would be a fun and educational experience. We booked our studio, grabbed the stuff from the Hatch with no problems and we were ready to go.

We, as a team or #Squad (Harriet, Megan and Justine) as all the cool kids are saying, feel pretty confident in our abilities. We can set a studio up pretty snappy and I'd say more times than not, it runs smoothly or with very few hiccups.

We grab all the lights, pop the camera on the tripod, tether it up to the mac... and we hit our first snag. We can't get the big boom to work. Cue lots of switching it on and off again.

Despair hits the squad and well, we don't really know what to do. We managed to find our Saviour himself. Chris. There's an almost audible sigh of relief when he comes in to see what the problem is. I think the difference is though, we are interested in what went wrong and how we could fix it for the next time.

Two things had gone wrong:

  1.  Harriet's hotshoe adaptor is more temperamental than me and that's saying something.
  2. We'd overloaded the plug socket. In that disappointed school teacher voice that Chris uses to emphasize a point he is making, he tells us that it's a 1-0-0-0 volts ANDS THATS A LOT OF VOLTS. Now, we're super safety saavy.
When we finally get cracking it becomes apparent that Macro photography is not for all of us. I personally, love it. But I've turned into one of those photography kids that will try any new technique I get taught, I'll keep practising until I can do something confidently. Other girls in the squad, didn't like this. To get results you have to be patient and you'll get people telling you your photo isn't in focus, but it's all part of the learning curve.

Here's some of the photos we shot with the macro lens. I really like them because the amount of detail they pick up is unreal. Especially when it comes to shooting Irises, you can count the individual muscle strands in the eye. Or the individual lashes. Incredible. On the flip side it also means your make up application has to be flawless.
